PlaceShapers welcomes new PM Andy Burnham and his focus on empowered local places

PlaceShapers has welcomed Andy Burnham as Prime Minister, saying his long-standing support for devolved decision-making and empowered local places could mark a significant shift in how government works with the wider contribution of housing associations beyond building new homes.
Catherine Ryder, Chief executive of PlaceShapers, said: "We congratulate Andy Burnham on becoming Prime Minister and look forward to working with him and his government. His understanding of the vital role housing plays in improving health, opportunity and economic growth, combined with devolved decision-making and empowered local places, could signal a fundamental shift in how government values the contribution of place-shaping social housing providers.
"These organisations are rooted in their communities and are committed to the long-term success of the places where they operate. "It was heartening to see that Andy Burnham's first pledge as Prime Minister was to bring an end to rough sleeping, which is a clear indication of his commitment to housing.
"We also recognise and welcome the significant progress made under Sir Keir Starmer's leadership – and thank him for prioritising social housing and engaging with the sector on a range of issues that impact on our work and our communities.
“The long-term commitment to affordable housing through investment in the Social and Affordable Homes Programme, and improvements to existing homes through the Warm Homes Plan have made the future securer for many people and given organisations across the sector greater confidence to plan ahead.
"There is now an opportunity to build on this by delivering the homes the country so desperately needs while placing equal emphasis on creating stronger places and communities. By investing in both homes and communities, the government can unlock lasting economic, social and health benefits for communities across the country.”
Following his appointment on Monday 20 July, PlaceShapers also welcomed announcements that Angela Rayner has re-joined the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Matthew Pennycook remains as housing minister.
