We now have the certainty, confidence, and support we need to crack on and deliver homes that will transform the lives of families.

PlaceShapers today welcomed Spending Review announcements from the Chancellor Rachel Reeves of a £39 billion investment in the Affordable Homes Programme and the ten-year social housing rent settlement.

Matthew Walker, Chair of PlaceShapers, said: Matthew Walker, Chair of PlaceShapers, said: “Today is a very significant landmark in addressing a housing crisis generations in the making. We now have the certainty, confidence, and support we need to crack on and deliver homes that will transform the lives of families living without access to warm, safe, and affordable housing. Place-shaping organisations intend to do just that starting today.

The announcements show the government is serious about delivering 1.5 million new homes over this Parliament, including a big and welcome increase in development for social rent. That’s great news for everyone.

We also value knowing the government listened to evidence on the impact of social rent convergence to unlock additional capacity to build new affordable homes and upgrade existing ones. Overall a great day for a sector that is determined to repay the confidence shown in us by this Government."

These HM Treasury commitments provide the long-term certainty, confidence, and support the sector needs to get on and build a new generation of social homes - our members stand ready to partner with the government in addressing a housing crisis that has been generations in the making.

We are particularly encouraged by the government’s decision to consult on how to implement social rent convergence. Our Spending Review submission outlines how this has the potential to unlock additional capacity for the sector - capacity that can be directed towards building new affordable homes and upgrading existing homes.

We will now work with our members to show how this funding and certainty will be used to benefit communities across the country.

Thank you to members whose evidence and experience informed our Spending Review submission and to Aspire for hosting a pre-Spending Review visit by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones
