Eden's partnership working creates wildflower meadow
13 May 2026

Our tenants have been clear that they want us to do more to help bees and other pollinators throughout Eden.
Eden Housing Association, residents of Lowther Village, pupils from Lowther Endowed Primary School and Nutkins Nursery, along with Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Fibrus, came together to plant a mix of hay meadow plants in Lowther Village.
The planting day was the culmination of a project started in August 2024 as part of a commitment to improve biodiversity on EHA owned land. Working with Village residents and guided and supported by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Wilder Lowther, part of a larger Get Cumbria Buzzing, Not Buffering project aims to involve the local community in increasing wildlife habitat within the village.
The focus is on creating wildflower meadows by introducing native northern UK plant species through seeds and plug plants. With long-term management, these areas are expected to develop into flower-rich grassland that will support pollinating insects as well as bring enjoyment to local residents. By increasing flower-rich areas in Lowther, the project will help strengthen pollinator populations and improve habitat connectivity across towns, parishes, and the wider countryside. The first flowers bloomed in Spring 2026.
Joanne Crone, Eden Housing Association's Property Compliance and Facilities Manager and project lead commented “Our tenants have been clear that they want us to do more to help bees and other pollinators throughout Eden. Wild Lowther has been our first project and we’ve been delighted to work with residents, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and our grounds maintenance contractor Alan Milne who will look after the meadow. The financial support from Fibrus has been very helpful and we’re looking forward to creating more diverse habitats across our estates in Eden."
