The Lewis family now have a new house and garden within reach of their family and friends thanks to Hightown sharedownership.

Home ownership dream possible for Ware family

Life is just perfect for Andy and Jenny Lewis now they have a new house and garden which is ideal for toddler Jasper and within reach of their family and friends.

Before they moved into their end-of-terrace shared ownership property in Ware, Hertfordshire, they were renting a one-bedroom flat, which wasn’t really suitable once Jasper, now aged two, came along.

Jenny, aged 30, said they struggled to find a privately rented two-bedroom flat in Ware which was accessible for a pushchair. “It was important for us to stay in Ware, but our options to rent were limited as many landlords wouldn’t take children and we couldn’t find anywhere that was suitable.”

When Jasper was born at just 29 weeks, the family put their search for a new home on hold, but Jenny’s mum spotted the shared ownership properties being offered by Hightown Housing Association in Brocket Meadows, Ware.

Civil engineer Andy, 34, and Jenny went along to a roadshow organised by Hightown to allow them to look at the three-bedroom property that would soon become their home, as well as find out more about shared ownership.

They now have a 50% share in their new home, with their monthly payments about the same as the rent for their one-bedroom flat.

Jenny, who worked for the Carers in Hertfordshire charity, before becoming a full-time mum, said: “The shared ownership scheme is brilliant – we wouldn’t have got our own home like this without it. The house is just ideal for us as it’s got enough space, including a big kitchen, as well as a secure back garden for Jasper to play in. He can also have friends round, which wasn’t really possible in the flat.

“I do voluntary work locally and my family are in Ware, so we wanted to stay in the area. It was also important for us to be within reach of the Lister Hospital, which has saved Jasper’s life. I had almost lost hope of getting our own place in Ware, but now we can stay part of our local community.”

Eva Hollands, Sales Manager for Hightown Homes, added: “It’s great to know Andy and Jenny are so happy with their new home. This was a popular shared ownership development, and we gave priority to people living or working in the area who would not have been able to afford to buy on the open market.”
