Grand Union Housing Group (GUHG), has been given the green light to build their single largest development to date.
Britannia Gate, which is being built on the old Iron Works site opposite Bedford Hospital, will be made up 49 apartments for a mixture of market rent, shared ownership and supported living.
GUHG worked closely with Bedford Borough Council to secure the site, which is close to the town centre, benefiting from local facilities and leisure opportunities along the Great River Ouse.
Aileen Evans, Grand Union’s Chief Executive, said: “This site represents our ambition to build more much needed housing. In the next five years we are going to continue to build more as part of our plans to spend over £230million on 1,800 new homes.
“The Government’s well publicised green paper highlighted the how important different housing solutions are for ending the national housing crisis. We are committed to playing our part and this scheme answers that call by providing great homes for all, whether it’s renting, taking first steps on the property ladder through shared ownership, or even needing specialist supported housing.”
Britannia Gate will offer 15 two bedroom apartments for market rent and 16 two bedroom apartments for shared ownership, which brings home ownership within the reach of those earning average salaries and avoids the need for potentially unaffordable deposits.
The scheme contains 18 one bedroom independent living that have been designed specifically for adults with learning disabilities. These residents will be supported by full time staff who have an office and accommodation on site.
