Glad you clicked through but you’ll need to come back on Wednesday 29 June to find out about We Work. Trust us, there’s going to be some amazing stories showing how PlaceShapers up and down the country change people’s lives...
Over the next five years Bron Afon will build 555 new homes, part of the 36,000 being built by PlaceShapers.
They have recently completed 16, all of which converted unused or derelict spaces into homes. Ty Cyfle is a development of eight one-bedroom flats for 16-24 year olds.
One of the first residents is 22 year old Cameron Knight who was formerly sleeping rough in a supermarket car park.
He said: “Moving into Ty Cyfle has really helped me. I now know what it’s like to live on my own and how to sort out bills, budgeting and how to look after myself. I wouldn’t be where I am today. If I hadn’t moved in here, I’d probably still be living under Asda or dead.”
Tyler Williams said: “Ty Cyfle was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. After the support I have had off Bron Afon I now feel ready to get a job and maybe starting to think about moving out into a new place. I feel much more independent.”
Duncan Forbes, chief executive of Bron Afon, said: “We are really proud to be part of the PlaceShapers network working alongside the many housing associations in England and Wales that are committed to the communities they serve.
We strongly support the principle of being a Place shaping organisation; involving our members and making sure they have real influence, building homes to respond to local needs, working closely with the Council as our partner and providing more than just landlord services. The local focus and successful relationships we have built with our partners in Torfaen Council and the Welsh Government have been essential to getting our development plans off the ground.
To ensure we don’t just build new homes but we also generate new local jobs and enable local people to build their skills we have set up our “That Works” Training Academy. Already nearly 500 local people have graduated from our Academy in the last nine months with jobs or new skills and qualifications.
This is an exciting time for Bron Afon in our first year as a homebuilder as we plan to start building 88 new affordable homes in Torfaen.”
Of the 555 that Bron Afon will build over the next five years, around 50% will be for social rent and the rest being shared ownership.
